I have had more than one person over the years ask me the question. The one everyone ask at some point in life.

What’s the secret?

I wish I could tell you there was a book, a blog, a message board, that would help propel you forward at unbelievable speeds on your way to becoming successful. In truth, I have yet to see myself as truly successful.There are many things that will help shape the way you do things, will help you see aspects of running a business and shooting photography that you might have never known otherwise, but the truth is simple. Finite.

There is no shortcut. No quick fix. No 1 definite answer.

Duct tape. A wire coat hanger. A glue gun. Nothing is going to create a patch that will hold. Trust me. Being from the south, quick fix patching is something we can all do by the age of 5.

The truth is, it simple takes 2 things. Hard work, and time.

I don’t mean a few extra hours, I mean the kind of hard work that makes you wish you could quit. Give up. Walk away.

Passion, how ever, rarely concedes to our terms and the only true choice, the only true option, when you find something you love, is to pursue as you have never pursued. You will fall, you will bruise your ego, you will feel pangs of defeat. Jealousy will find it’s way into your heart if your not careful, but you will overcome if you keep at it.

I can not even count the number of people who have ask me how to become me. When I answered them honestly, when I told them the amount of time I put into my craft, the answer is always the same, “I don’t have that kind of time, I need to do it faster.” My reply is always the same, “Don’t build on shifting sand.” A good foundation is far better than a quick, hurried one. Good things take time. My dad always told me that.

Truer words have never been spoken.
